Quick answer: A Story is 1080 × 1920 pixels, but not all of that space is yours. The platform's UI covers the top and bottom bands, and anything important placed there is unreadable or hidden.

The safe zone is the area in the middle where text and key visuals stay visible. This page covers the zones for Instagram Stories, Reels, and similar 9:16 formats.

The story canvas at 1080 × 1920

Band Pixels What's there
Top zone ~250 px Username, account info, close button
Safe zone ~1420 px (centered) Headlines, product, text
Bottom zone ~250 px Reply bar, stickers, CTAs, progress bar

Roughly: keep essential text between 250 px and 1670 px from the top of the 1920-pixel canvas. The middle 1080 px horizontally is the safest horizontal band.

Reels and the profile-grid trap

Reels and TikToks are 9:16 too, but Reel covers also appear in the Instagram profile grid at 1:1, and on the Reels tab with a different crop. Keep the key face and the hook text in the center square of the frame, roughly 1080 × 1080 in the middle. The top and bottom can be background.

Why designs get covered

The common mistakes are the same ones every launch makes:

  • Headline across the top. The account name and progress bar sit on it.
  • CTA at the bottom. The reply bar and stickers cover it.
  • Tiny text near the edges. Captions and captions labels can overlap both sides.
  • Hard-to-read text without a background. Story content is often over photos; a semi-transparent panel behind the text is a normal fix.

Practical story template

A reliable 9:16 story layout:

  • Top band (250 px): empty, or a small logo.
  • Upper-middle: the headline, one or two lines.
  • Center: the product screenshot or visual.
  • Lower-middle: a short supporting line.
  • Bottom band (250 px): empty; the platform's own CTA lives there.

For multi-page stories, the swipe/next arrow is on the right edge, so keep text clear of that edge too.

How launch stories differ

A launch story is a sequence of screens:

  1. The hook.
  2. The product with the headline.
  3. A benefit or a screenshot.
  4. A second benefit or result.
  5. The CTA: "link in bio" or a sticker.

Every page uses the same safe zones. The 1080 × 1920 story is one of the formats generated in Neatico's launch kit alongside the feed and link-card sizes, and the full 2026 dimension table is here.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the safe zone in an Instagram Story? Leave about 250 px clear at the top and bottom, and keep text off the side edges. The center ~1080 px vertically is the safe area.

What happens if I put text outside the safe zone? The platform UI overlays it or the caption truncates it, so it becomes unreadable.

Do Reels have the same safe zones as Stories? Same vertical canvas, and additionally the cover must survive the square profile-grid crop, so keep the hook in the center.

Can I use a 1080 × 1350 image in a Story? It will appear with bars or gaps. Stories are 9:16, not 4:5. Use the 1080 × 1920 file.

Do these rules apply to TikTok? Yes, 9:16 with similar UI overlays on the right and bottom.

Design the story first at 1080 × 1920, then drag a 250 px guide line from the top and bottom. If every word is between them, the UI can't eat your launch.
